A Collection of 1950s Air Force Cartoons and the Stories Behind Them

Above the Clouds

When my father depicted flying, he didn’t seem to view it as the safest way to travel.

angels - on the double!
wild blue yonder - on the double!
model airplane - on the double!
forgot my parachute - on the double!

There also seemed to be some fascination with flying among other branches of the Armed Services. The Air Force had been formed less than a decade before in 1947, although an Aeronautical Division of the U.S. Army dates back to 1907, just four years after the Wright Brothers took their historic flight.

Still, I think these two cartoons are more inspired by the competition among various branches of the service and how some of them looked down (pun intended) on the others.

it's a plane - on the double!
blueboy - on the double!
