A Collection of 1950s Air Force Cartoons and the Stories Behind Them

Phil Goes Overseas, Part Two

Another category of cartoons captures my father visiting famous museums. It must have been exciting for him to visit these places as a young man with aspirations to become an artist. Note his depictions of the Venus de Milo and Winged Victory. Look at that detail!

This next set of cartoons depicts our GIs in the desert, even though my dad was never in the desert or close to it. He told me they were simply reflective of common views and jokes at the time.

It’s hard to see the detail in the first one, but I think it’s about quicksand.

The flying carpet cartoon mentions the sound barrier, which was broken nine years earlier by Chuck Yeager, who was surely still a big hero to Airmen in the early 1950s, as he still is today.
